Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure Light Duty Vehicle Enroute (Motorway) Grant Scheme
The first ZEVI EV Charging Infrastructure Light Duty Vehicle En-Route (Motorway) Grant Scheme launched in February 2024. In July, 17 new high-powered recharging pools were announced, delivering 131 recharging points with a total capacity of 24 megawatts. Each site will feature Fast and Ultra-Fast chargers, with completion expected by late 2025. EV Recharging Infrastructure Light Duty Vehicle (LDV).
National Road Grant Scheme
In October 2024, a second grant scheme was launched across the National Road Network. This scheme targets over 1,200 km of national single-carriageway roads. The roll-out of EV recharging infrastructure pools will be at no more than 60 km in each direction. The new recharging infrastructure is expected to be in place by the end of 2025.
Shared Island Sports Club EV Charging Scheme
The Shared Island Sports Club EV Charging Scheme was launched in 2023 to support the installation of a network of publicly accessible chargers in local sports clubs. This is the first destination scheme launched as part of the government’s EV Charging Infrastructure Strategy. In September 2024, over 220 sports clubs were deemed eligible to progress to the delivery phase of the scheme.
Electric Small Public Service Vehicle Grant Scheme
The Electric Small Public Service Vehicle Grant Scheme was renewed in 2024 to support the uptake of EVs in the Small Public Service Vehicle sector (taxis, hackneys, and limousines). Drivers can apply for grants of up to €10,000 towards the purchase of a new full-battery electric Small Public Service Vehicle, with a further €2,500 available to convert it to a wheelchair-accessible model. Those scrapping older, more polluting, or high mileage vehicles are now eligible for double the normal grant if they make the switch to electric, with €20K available for a new full electric or €25K for a wheelchair-accessible new battery electric vehicle.
Zero-Emission Heavy Duty Vehicle Purchase Grant Scheme
The Zero-Emission Heavy Duty Vehicle Purchase Grant Scheme (ZEHDV) opened in February 2024. The scheme awards grants to assist companies and enterprises who wish to buy zero-emission heavy-duty vehicles (ZEHDV) which are supported by the scheme, instead of buying the diesel equivalent. In November 2024, the scheme was expanded to include depot and logistics recharging infrastructure grants, so businesses can now access funding for recharging stations at depots, logistics hubs, and commercial premises.
EV Commercial Fleet Trial report
The Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) ran an EV commercial fleet trial on behalf of Zero Emission Vehicles Ireland (ZEVI). The aim of this trial was to provide real-world EV driving experience for businesses to give them an understanding of how an EV may or may not work for their business. A total of 187 businesses took part. They received an EV (car or van) for use for three months with support for a charging solution required. On average, 3,000km were driven every three months with charging done every three days. Surveys were conducted before and after the trial with participants.
Fleet Assessment Scheme
The Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI), funded by ZEVI, will roll out a Fleet Assessment Scheme. The goal of this scheme is to assist and guide businesses with fleets of 5 or more vehicles in transitioning to electric vehicles (EVs). SEAI will run a
competitive tender to procure a panel of assessors. Businesses will be able to apply to SEAI to take part in this scheme. A range of businesses and fleet types will be selected and matched with an assessor. The assessor will provide a report to the business and SEAI on what vehicles could transition to EVs, and what charging plan and power would be needed. This pilot scheme should be able to support between 50 and 60 businesses in 2025.
EV Purchase Grants
Zero Emission Vehicles Ireland (ZEVI), through SEAI, will continue to support the purchase of EVs across several sectors:
• Private Car Grant – €3,500.
• Commercial van grants between €3,800 and €7,600.
• Electric mopeds and motorbikes – €500 – €1,000.
ZEVI-TII EV Recharging Infrastructure LDV National Road Grant Scheme
The third EV Recharging Infrastructure Light Duty Vehicle (LDV) National Road Grant Scheme will be launched in February 2025. This phase will focus on installing high-powered recharging stations along 3,000km of national primary and secondary roads. The scheme aims to significantly boost Ireland’s EV recharging capacity by focusing on public recharging facilities within 3km of national roads. The new recharging infrastructure is expected to be operational by the end of 2025.
The Regional and Local EV Charging Network Plan
The Regional and Local EV Charging Network Plan will be published in early 2025 after public consultation. As the second part of the National EV Charging Network Plan, it complements the National Road Network EV Charging Plan (2024). The plan outlines a strategy for accelerating public EV charging infrastructure in cities, towns, and villages, ensuring a cohesive, standardised rollout led by local authorities working collaboratively to support an equitable transition to EVs.
Strategy for Data Concerning Electric Vehicles Recharging Infrastructure
The Strategy for Data Concerning Electric Vehicles Recharging Infrastructure Plan will be published in early 2025, outlining measures for effective data collection, usage, and accessibility. Its goal is to establish the data infrastructure and policies needed
to support EV users in Ireland. As the charging network expands, robust data practices will be crucial, ensuring transparency and compliance with government and EU guidelines.
