The Task is based on the previous HEV task 30 “Assessment of Environmental Effects of Electric Vehicles” (2016 – 2021) and expands its focus on passenger vehicles to further UNECE-classes like two-wheelers, bus, heavy and delivery trucks, and other working machines with its necessary charging infrastructure. The main emphasis of the internationally agreed topics is the elaboration of a common LCA approach for this vehicle classes among the participating countries. This common approach will give the IEA as organization as well as the participating partner countries a better, fact based comparison of environmental effects of alternative propulsion systems based on electricity, which are battery electric vehicles, hydrogen fuel cell vehicles and e-fuel vehicles with an internal combustion engine in comparison to conventional fuels.
LCA of Trucks
Participants examined the environmental impacts of various truck propulsion systems using Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), engaging in presentations, group discussions, and interactive sessions focused on methodology, e-fuels, circularity, climate neutrality, and key challenges in applying LCA to trucks.
LCA of Buses
The expert workshop analysed the environmental impacts of different bus propulsion systems using Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), covering methodology, practical applications, circularity, and key issues through presentations, discussions, and interactive group work.
LCA of Electric Vehicles
This session focused on evaluating the environmental impacts of electric vehicles through LCA. The workshop explored its relevance for policy, industry, and consumers, addressed methodological challenges, compared EVs with other fuels, and highlighted findings from IEA EV Task 46. It also was a chance for stakeholder exchanges and identified future research needs in the context of climate neutrality and circularity.
